The annual campaign celebrates achievement and creates awareness about the goal of college and career readiness for all.

“The individuals and groups named ACT state exemplars demonstrate perseverance and innovative thinking and serve as examples to others working to improve college and career readiness for all,” said Scott Montgomery, ACT senior vice president of public affairs.

The campaign identifies exemplars in each of four categories—students, high schools, postsecondary institutions and employers—for each participating state. Tallahassee Community College was Florida’s only postsecondary exemplar.

Catie Goodman“TCC has made a concerted effort to provide students opportunities to be college and career ready throughout their time at the College,” said Catie Goodman, director of the TCC Career Center. “We intend to continue working to expand that, because it really pays off for our students.”

According to Goodman, career readiness begins early for TCC students. They participate in career exploration activities during new student orientation, and their first advising appointment includes discussion of career goals and the beginning of an academic map aligned with their goals. Students use an online tool called Career Coach to research specific majors and related occupations and complete a career portfolio.

The Career Center offers services to help students land internships and hosts job fairs and events such as Resumania and CareerFEST. Students nearing graduation are encouraged to meet with TCC’s career placement coordinator, who assists with job searches and transition to a university or to the workforce.

Tallahassee Community College and the exemplars from other states will be considered for ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign national semifinalist status. Finally, a committee composed of national education and workforce leaders will choose one semifinalist per category to make up four national exemplars. These national exemplars, along with all state exemplars, will be honored at an event in late fall 2017 in Iowa City.
